Not much is known about Capt. Peter
Johnson and his wife
Anne. What we do know comes from the will of Anne
which was probated on 27 May 1656. In that will
Anne left to her eldest son Leonard "the plantation." To her next
son, James, she left a tract of land known as the "Island Neck" on Island
Ck. To her two daughters, Mary and Cornelia, she left
personalty. The will lists Anne as the
widow of Capt. Peter Johnson of Patuxent. Peter would have died between
1650-1656. He would have married Anne before 1651. It is
important to note that the will acted much as a prenuptial agreement would
today. Ann was on the eve of remarrying Wm. Dorrington and the will
was there to protect the inheritances of Peter's
children.
We do
know a little about the arrival of Anne in Maryland. Gust Skordas in
his book on "The Early
Settlers of Maryland" listed Anne Johnson as being
transported to the MD in 1651 along with her sons Peter, James and
Derrick, and her two daughters Cornelia and Mary. Ms. Cryer however
states that Mary did not come to America with Peter and Anne. She
has Mary coming to America in 1690. We don't know
anything about Derrick. He may have predeceased his parents because he
does not show up in Anne's will.
