John Alexander Johnson was born on December 28, 1861 in Huntersville, Maryland.  He was the son of Joseph Stephen & Eliza (Mattingly) Johnson.  He married Mary Ann "Molly" Hayes on December 18, 1883.  They were married by the Married by Rev. Father Copens.  Mary Ann was born on October 13, 1860.  John Alexander died on October 3, 1947 and was buried in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church Cemetery in Morganza, Maryland.  Mary Ann died on March 4, 1937 (other sources say 1939 but see her tombstone) and was buried with her husband.

Lewis and Catherine, brother and sister of John Johnson, were witnesses to his wedding.  John A. Johnson was appointed road supervisor for the 5th District on May 25, 1894.  He was the School Commissioner for Gravel Hill-Charlotte Hall for the 1900/01 term.  He owned a farm on the Morganza-Oraville Road in 1910.

Susan Johnson Gagliardi supplied this wonderful photograph of Mary Ann Molly Hayes at age 16. Susan has her sewing machine, which her grandfather Claude Johnson motorized for her!  She also supplied this great pictures of some of the Johnson ancestors, including a young John Alexander "Aleck" Johnson and his son Francis Desales Johnson and daughter Bessie Marie Johnson.

In this rare photograph, supplied by Kathleen Johnson Green, we see (left to right) Kathleen & Thomas F. Johnson's grandfather Francis Desales Johnson, their great grandfather John Alexander Johnson,  and James Franklin Mundie. From the St. Mary's Beacon, Nov. 25, 1886 here is the the obituary for John Spencer:

"Departed this life, November 17, 1886, JOHN SPENCER, infant son of John A. and Mary A. Johnson, aged 10 months and 16 days.

Lonely the house and sad the hours

Since our dear little Spencer is gone

But Oh a brighter home than ours

Is now in heaven his own.

Farewell, parents and little brother too

For no longer shall I stay with you

I leave you here your troubles to bear

While I go to Heaven a crown to wear.
