St. Joseph's
Catholic Church is
located in Morganza, Maryland. O'Rourke in his book "Catholic
Families of Southern Maryland" records the baptism of Elizabeth
Alvy on March 22, 1761, with Leonard Johnson as a witness. This could be
the Leonard Johnson who moved to Kentucky. MANY
generations of Johnsons can be found in both the "old" St. Joseph's and
the "new" St. Joseph's graveyard. Leona Cryer when she
began her work on her book "Some Johnsons of southern
Maryland" played a large role in helping locate the many Johnsons
that were buried in the "old" cemetery. Now the historical society
has played a role in seeing that the old cemetery is being preserved.
